Rescuing, sheltering, and urgently treating animals in advanced states of emaciation, infested with lice, exhausted from infections, and living in disastrous conditions… The Marais shelter is currently saturated, with the number of rescued equines reaching 140, so numerous are the seizures in recent weeks.

Poverty, depression, substance abuse, or alcoholism are the causes of neglect, but we also observe a lack of resources and financial insecurity further exacerbated by the cost of living.

An unsustainable rhythm

The veterinary inspectors of the Animal Welfare Unit of the Walloon Region (UBEAW), alerted by complaints, carry out these seizures and notify shelters to distribute the mistreated animals taken in charge by the shelters that respond to their call.

The UBEAW, through the Walloon Region, provides us with 300 euros per seized animal once the veterinary report is established. However, this amount only covers the initial veterinary appointments and the most urgent treatments.

For animals in the worst condition requiring long-term treatment and close monitoring, we can spend up to 1,000 euros before they are fully recovered and out of danger.

Without the generosity of our donors, we wouldn’t be able to take care of these abused animals. We do not receive subsidies from the Region.
